ULEZ Expansion Reduces Pollution Across London Areas

A recent report from Transport for London (TfL) and the Greater London Authority highlights significant reductions in air pollution following the expansion of the Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ) to outer London boroughs in August 2023. Nitrogen dioxide (NO₂) emissions dropped by 14% in outer areas, with a citywide decrease of 13%, attributed to the scrappage of older vehicles and a compliance rate of 96.7% among vehicles in the zone. Contrary to early concerns from local businesses and political opposition, the report suggests that commercial activity has not suffered due to the ULEZ expansion. Critics, however, argue that the report lacks a thorough evaluation of whether the method of implementation was the most effective approach to achieve desired health outcomes. Additionally, boroughs that opposed the ULEZ, such as Sutton and Croydon, experienced the largest drops in NO₂ emissions, suggesting a correlation between opposition and improved air quality.
