PETA urges Led Zeppelin's Robert Plant to adopt name promoting sustainable plant-based wools
Animal rights organization PETA has asked Led Zeppelin frontman Robert Plant to temporarily change his name to "Robert Plant Wool" to promote November's Plant Wool Month, which raises awareness about sustainable, animal-free, and plastic-free yarns. The campaign highlights plant-based fibers such as cotton, hemp, and linen as cruelty-free alternatives to traditional wool and cashmere, which involve animal suffering and have significant environmental impacts like methane emissions. PETA's letter references Plant's iconic song "Kashmir" to contrast its celebration with the harsh realities of cashmere production, urging Plant to support the shift toward compassionate and eco-friendly fashion. PETA Vice President Elisa Allen emphasized the campaign's goals of promoting sustainable fashion, lowering greenhouse gas emissions, and protecting animals. While Plant has not yet responded to the request, PETA believes his symbolic name change could amplify the message of sustainable, animal-friendly textiles. The campaign also stresses the environmental damage caused by sheep farming, including land use, chemical treatments, and methane emissions, positioning plant wools as a kinder alternative for both animals and the planet.
