Penei Sewell Named Polynesian Player of the Year
Penei Sewell of the Detroit Lions has been recognized for his outstanding performance during the 2024 NFL season, earning first-team All-Pro honors from the Associated Press and winning the Polynesian Pro Football Player of the Year Award. The Lions achieved a remarkable 15-2 record, clinching the NFC North Division Title and securing the top seed in the NFC, with Sewell playing a crucial role by allowing no sacks throughout the season. Additionally, he was also named to the NFLPA Players' All-Pro Team, reflecting the respect he commands from his peers. Offensive coordinator Ben Johnson praised the intelligence and experience of the Lions' roster, which has allowed for more dynamic play-calling. Sewell's formal recognition will take place at the Polynesian Football Hall of Fame Celebration Dinner on January 18, 2025, alongside his acknowledgment during the Polynesian Bowl on January 17, 2025. This marks Sewell's third consecutive Pro Bowl appearance and highlights his ascent as one of the league's top tackles.
