IDF Halts Female Combat Mobility Training Over Health Concerns
The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) has discontinued a pilot program training women for combat mobility roles due to concerns over their physical and combat fitness, as well as potential health risks from the intensified training. Despite showing professional competence on par with male counterparts, the women were deemed unlikely to meet the demanding standards required for these frontline roles, which involve delivering supplies and evacuating wounded soldiers under fire. IDF Chief of Staff Lt-Gen Eyal Zamir endorsed the decision following recommendations from senior commanders, emphasizing a commitment to integrating women in combat through a revised pilot scheme planned for next year. While women have succeeded in other specialized combat units such as Oketz, Yahalom, and 669, the suspension raises concerns about a possible regression in expanding women's combat roles. The decision coincides with heightened military activity following the October 2023 Hamas attacks, which have intensified scrutiny on the IDF's operational capabilities and gender integration policies. The military has assured that women affected by the program's cancellation will have options to transfer to other combat roles or administrative duties.
