COMAC Secures Major AirAsia, Air Cambodia Jet Orders

China's state-owned aircraft manufacturer COMAC is making significant inroads into the Southeast Asian aviation market with major orders for its C919 and C909 jets. Malaysian low-cost carrier AirAsia is in active discussions to purchase the C919, potentially becoming the first foreign airline to place an order for the aircraft, signaling a diversification from its current Airbus fleet. Meanwhile, Cambodia's flag carrier, Air Cambodia, has signed a memorandum of understanding to buy 10 C909 regional jets with options for 10 more, potentially marking the largest overseas order for the model. The C909, a smaller regional jet designed for short-haul flights, is already operated by airlines in Indonesia, Laos, and Vietnam, helping COMAC expand its presence beyond China. These developments come as Airbus and Boeing face delivery challenges, positioning COMAC as a competitive alternative in the global narrowbody aircraft market. The deals also emphasize growing aviation ties between China and Southeast Asia, with cooperation extending beyond sales to operational support and industry development.
