Stormzy Receives Honorary Law Degree from Cambridge for Scholarship Impact

UK rapper Stormzy was awarded an honorary Doctorate in Law by the University of Cambridge in recognition of his philanthropic work, particularly his scholarship program supporting Black British students in higher education. Since its launch in 2018, the Stormzy Scholarship has supported 55 students with full tuition and maintenance funding, contributing to a significant rise in applications from Black students to Cambridge, a phenomenon dubbed the 'Stormzy effect.' The scholarship initially funded two students annually but has since expanded to support ten students each year, aiming to level the playing field for underrepresented minorities and inspire young people from all backgrounds to pursue prestigious education. Stormzy received his degree alongside notable figures such as actor Sir Simon Russell Beale, political activist Professor Angela Davis, and Olympic gold medallist Dame Katherine Grainger. His award highlights his impact beyond music, encompassing education, sport, and literature. The University and Vice-Chancellor Professor Deborah Prentice praised his transformative contributions, which have inspired people in Cambridge and globally.
