FIA Grants 17-Year-Old Arvid Lindblad Early F1 Super License
The FIA has granted Red Bull junior driver Arvid Lindblad an early Formula 1 superlicense exemption, allowing him to compete in F1 before turning 18 in August. This decision follows a 2024 rule change permitting the FIA to award superlicenses to exceptional 17-year-olds who demonstrate outstanding ability and maturity in single-seater racing, a criterion Lindblad meets with his strong performances in Formula 2 and other junior series. The World Motor Sport Council approved Red Bull's request, recognizing Lindblad’s consistent success and maturity, including his current third-place standing in the F2 championship and multiple race victories. This early superlicense enables Lindblad to participate in F1 free practice sessions and serve as a reserve driver for Red Bull and its junior team, Racing Bulls. The timing is notable as Max Verstappen, Red Bull's lead driver, is close to a race ban due to accumulating penalty points, potentially opening a seat for Lindblad. The rule adjustment, first applied for Kimi Antonelli last year, aims to provide teams with greater flexibility in promoting young talent with proven competence.
