Seventh Measles Case Confirmed in Michigan

Michigan has confirmed its seventh measles case of 2024, involving an adult in Wayne County who traveled internationally. This case is part of a rise in measles infections across the state, following at least five previous cases in the metro Detroit area this year. Health officials have identified potential exposure sites, including the Michigan Medicine Canton Health Center and Trinity Health IHA Urgent Care in Livonia, urging unvaccinated individuals to seek guidance and monitor for symptoms. Symptoms typically appear within 21 days of exposure and include high fever, cough, and a characteristic rash. Measles is highly contagious, with 90% infection rates among unvaccinated individuals exposed to the virus. Vaccination remains the most effective prevention method, with two doses providing approximately 97% effectiveness against the disease.
