Philippines, US Conduct Seventh Maritime Drills West Philippine Sea
The Philippines and United States conducted their seventh Maritime Cooperative Activity (MCA) in the West Philippine Sea and South China Sea, focusing on enhancing interoperability and regional security amid rising tensions over territorial claims. The exercises included fire support rehearsals, communications checks, division tactics, and maritime domain awareness operations, involving Philippine Navy assets such as the newly commissioned guided missile frigate BRP Miguel Malvar and Philippine Coast Guard vessels, alongside U.S. Marine and naval forces. The BRP Miguel Malvar, equipped for multi-threat defense, was tested operationally for the first time during the drills, highlighting its role in the Philippines' military modernization efforts. These joint exercises underscore the commitment of both countries to uphold international law and assert sovereign rights in the region, reflecting increased military cooperation under President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. as a response to China's expansive claims. The drills, conducted away from contested features, aimed to improve coordination in littoral combat environments and maritime domain reconnaissance, demonstrating a shared resolve to maintain peace and stability in the strategic maritime area.
