UNICEF Reports 74 Children Killed in Gaza

UNICEF reported that at least 74 children have been killed in Gaza during the first week of 2025 amid ongoing violence, with fatalities occurring in various locations including Gaza City, Khan Younis, and Al Mawasi, a zone labeled as a safe area. The humanitarian crisis in Gaza is exacerbated by severe winter conditions, leading to the deaths of eight infants from hypothermia since December 26, as families struggle in makeshift shelters without basic necessities. UNICEF Executive Director Catherine Russell has called for an immediate ceasefire, emphasizing that the new year has thus far brought only increased suffering for children. The organization is also urging all parties to the conflict to adhere to international humanitarian law and ensure safe access for aid workers. With medical facilities under severe strain, the last operational pediatric unit in northern Gaza has closed, leaving many without critical healthcare access. The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies has also called for Israel to allow humanitarian aid into Gaza, highlighting the dire need for relief in the region.
