BMW Plans First Fuel Cell EV Production at Steyr in 2028
BMW is preparing to launch its first series-production hydrogen fuel cell vehicle in 2028, marking a significant step in the automaker's long-standing exploration of hydrogen technology. The third-generation fuel cell system, jointly developed with Toyota, is about 25% smaller and more powerful than previous versions, offering improved efficiency, greater range, and lower energy consumption. Production of the fuel cell systems will be centered at BMW's Plant Steyr in Austria, with additional components manufactured in Landshut, Germany, and prototype development occurring at competence centers in Munich and Steyr. BMW plans to integrate this new fuel cell technology into existing models, likely starting with the next-generation X5 and possibly the Neue Klasse platform vehicles like the iX3. The collaboration with Toyota leverages synergies in development and procurement, aiming to create scalable fuel cell systems suitable for both passenger and commercial vehicles. This initiative reflects BMW's commitment to diversifying its zero-emission powertrain portfolio alongside battery-electric vehicles.
