Attacks Increase Around Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Plant, IAEA Reports

Rafael Grossi, head of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), reported an increase in attacks around the Russian-controlled Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant in Ukraine during a recent visit to Moscow. He emphasized the unprecedented situation of operating Europe's largest nuclear facility in an active combat zone, raising concerns about potential nuclear incidents. While Russian officials claim Ukraine is responsible for the attacks, Grossi noted it is impossible to determine the origin of drone fragments found at the site. Discussions also touched on the risks posed to other nuclear facilities, such as the Kursk and Smolensk plants, amid ongoing military activity. Grossi assured that the IAEA is addressing these security issues at the highest levels internationally. He highlighted the urgency of maintaining nuclear safety in the region as military activity escalates around the plant.
