A recent United Nations report reveals that over 600 female athletes have lost nearly 900 medals to transgender competitors in women's sports categories. The study, titled 'Violence against women and girls in sports,' indicates these losses occurred in more than 400 competitions across 29 different sports. It argues that the introduction of mixed-sex categories has disadvantaged biologically female athletes, who face inherent advantages from male competitors, such as higher strength and testosterone levels, even before puberty. The report highlights that current policies surrounding testosterone suppression for transgender athletes do not sufficiently level the playing field, as they do not negate the advantages gained prior to transitioning. Reem Alsalem, the UN special rapporteur on violence against women and girls, emphasized that these findings illustrate a systemic issue regarding fair competition in sports. The report raises broader concerns about violence and discrimination against women in athletics.
