Tanzania Elections Trigger Nationwide Protests, Police Use Tear Gas, Gunfire
Tanzania has experienced significant unrest following the recent general election, where major opposition figures were excluded from the presidential race, leading to widespread protests, particularly in Dar es Salaam and other major cities. Police responded to these demonstrations with tear gas and gunfire, resulting in at least two reported deaths, including a civilian and a police officer, according to Amnesty International and other sources. The government imposed an overnight curfew in Dar es Salaam, and internet access was intermittently disrupted or cut off entirely, complicating communication among protesters. The Independent National Electoral Commission barred the main opposition party, Chadema, and opposition candidates, intensifying public anger and accusations of government repression, including arrests and charges of treason against opposition leaders. Human rights organizations have raised concerns about escalating political violence, disappearances, and a crackdown on activists, journalists, and opposition members. Despite the unrest, provisional election results showed President Samia Suluhu Hassan winning commanding majorities, as the ruling Chama Cha Mapinduzi party continues its long-standing governance since independence.
