Energy Stocks Outperform During Mixed Week
North American markets were mixed over the week, with the S&P/TSX roughly flat-to-down on some sessions while select sectors and stocks outperformed. Energy led U.S. midday gains, with Valero rising about 2.2% and EQT about 1.5%, helping the Energy Select Sector SPDR ETF (XLE) climb 0.6% on the day and 8.63% year-to-date. Metals & mining and rental/royalty names also showed strength, led by large moves in Lithium Americas and NioCorp and a jump in royalty trusts such as San Juan Basin Royalty Trust. Several large Canadian names outperformed the TSX on various days, including Power Corp. of Canada, BCE, TC Energy and Suncor, while Cenovus posted mixed moves during the week. Smaller U.S. names saw outsized moves as well, with FuelCell Energy surging 14.83% for its fifth consecutive day of gains and Ocugen rising 3.73%.
