Kentucky Derby Winner Mystik Dan Debuts Turf in Grade 1 Arlington Million
Mystik Dan, the 2024 Kentucky Derby winner, is making his turf debut in the Grade 1 Arlington Million Stakes at Colonial Downs, marking a significant shift as he has never previously raced on turf. Trainer Kenny McPeek chose this race to test Mystik Dan against the older horses and to enhance his appeal as a stallion prospect, despite the colt lacking a strong turf pedigree or prior turf performance. The Arlington Million, now held at Colonial Downs instead of its original Chicago location, features a competitive field including the favorite Integration, who has a strong record on turf and at Colonial Downs. Mystik Dan will break from the rail with rider Brian Hernandez Jr., but faces challenges from other speed horses in the race. McPeek noted that Mystik Dan's recent workout on Saratoga's turf was impressive, suggesting the colt adapted well to the surface. The race is a strategic attempt to find a suitable niche for Mystik Dan amid a tough older horse division on dirt, while also potentially boosting his breeding value.
