Lithuanian Social Democrats Win General Elections

The Lithuanian Social Democratic Party (LSDP) has claimed victory in the recent parliamentary elections, securing approximately 19% of the vote and 18 seats in parliament, while planning to form a coalition with the Democratic Union 'For Lithuania' and potentially the Lithuanian Farmers and Greens Union (LVŽS). President Gitanas Nausėda expressed optimism about a centre-left government, suggesting it will continue the country's foreign policy and improve domestic issues. The final composition of parliament will depend on run-off elections scheduled for October 27, where 63 additional seats are up for grabs. The LSDP leader, Vilija Blinkeviciūtė, is confident in forming a three-party coalition, although she has ruled out collaboration with the Dawn of the River Neman party. The previous conservative government led by the Homeland Union faced criticism due to economic challenges, paving the way for the Social Democrats' rise in popularity.
