Police Scotland Begins National Rollout of Body Worn Cameras
Police Scotland has begun the national rollout of body-worn video cameras, starting with approximately 750 officers in Tayside. Over the next 12 to 18 months, more than 10,500 Motorola Solutions VB400 cameras will be distributed to frontline officers and custody staff across Scotland. Chief Constable Jo Farrell emphasized that the cameras are intended to enhance public trust, support officer safety, and improve the quality of evidence in court, ultimately delivering faster justice for victims. While the rollout has received strong public support, there are concerns regarding potential uses such as live facial recognition, which could lead to 'dystopian' surveillance practices. Farrell stated that any implementation of advanced technologies would be approached cautiously, ensuring public consultation and consideration of privacy rights. Overall, the initiative aims to modernize policing and address public safety and transparency concerns.
