Khaleda Zia Admitted to Hospital for Treatment
Former Bangladesh Prime Minister Khaleda Zia, aged 79, was admitted to Dhaka's Evercare Hospital early Thursday. She has been suffering from multiple health issues, including liver cirrhosis, arthritis, diabetes, and complications with her kidneys, lungs, heart, and eyes. Her physician, Prof. AZM Zahid Hossain, stated that the medical board has recommended several tests to determine the next steps in her treatment. Zia, who had been under house arrest for five years, was freed and acquitted of all charges earlier this month following the fall of the Awami League government led by Sheikh Hasina. Zia has recently had a pacemaker installed and her doctors have recommended sending her abroad for further treatment. She served as Bangladesh's Prime Minister from 1991 to 1996 and again from 2001 to 2006.
