Ivanhoe Mines Reports 11% Copper Production Increase at Kamoa-Kakula DRC
Ivanhoe Mines' Kamoa-Kakula Copper Complex in the Democratic Republic of Congo produced 112,009 tonnes of copper in Q2 2025, marking an 11% year-on-year increase despite earlier disruptions caused by seismic activity. The Phase 1 and 2 concentrators are operating at about 85% of design capacity, with 45% of ore feed now sourced from the western side of the Kakula mine where mining resumed in early June, while the Phase 3 concentrator is running 30% above design capacity. Dewatering efforts are progressing as planned, with Stage 1 completed and Stage 2 dewatering set to begin soon, supported by high-capacity pumps being shipped to the site. Underground development has started on a new high-grade mining area in the eastern part of Kakula, expected to deliver ore by mid-2026. Despite the strong production rebound, Ivanhoe revised its 2025 production guidance downward due to the earthquake-related delays, and the company currently holds a stockpile of unsold copper concentrate. Market reactions have been cautious, reflecting concerns about consistent output and operational challenges, but Ivanhoe’s ongoing projects, including Project 95 aiming to boost recovery rates to 95% by early 2026, position it well for future growth.
