Türkiye Discovers 75B Cubic Meters Gas Reserve in Black Sea

Türkiye has discovered a new natural gas reserve of 75 billion cubic meters in the Black Sea's Goktepe-3 well, with an estimated economic value of around $30 billion, according to President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. This reserve alone could meet the country's residential natural gas demand for approximately 3.5 years, marking a significant step toward energy independence. The drilling at Goktepe-3 was completed using the seventh-generation drilling ship Abdulhamid Han, reaching a depth of 3,500 meters after 49 days of operations. Türkiye currently produces about 7-8% of its natural gas domestically and aims to reduce its energy import dependence, which presently exceeds 90%. Erdogan highlighted the country's broader strategic energy investments across various sectors, including nuclear, hydroelectric, wind, geothermal, solar, oil, and natural gas, to strengthen its energy security and regional energy hub ambitions. These developments align with Türkiye's ongoing efforts to diversify energy resources and enhance supply security.
