Five Killed in SUV Train Collision Gary Indiana
A tragic collision occurred Wednesday night in Gary, Indiana, near Chicago, when a vehicle with five occupants drove around lowered railroad crossing gates and was struck by a South Shore Line train. All five people in the vehicle died, while none of the 32 passengers or crew aboard the eastbound train were injured. The incident happened near the intersection of US 12/US 20 and Seventh Street, with the involved train identified as South Shore Line Train 133, the last train to South Bend that night. Train service was temporarily suspended for about four hours but has since resumed. Authorities and the South Shore Line urged the public to never bypass crossing signals and to always expect trains at any time from any direction. Emergency responders promptly arrived at the scene, and investigations continue as the victims’ identities remain undisclosed.
