Moldova Supplies Transnistria with 3M Cubic Meters of Gas Loan, EU Guarantees €30M

Moldova has agreed to supply 3 million cubic meters of natural gas to the breakaway region of Transnistria under a temporary loan arrangement to address a severe energy crisis. This decision follows the European Union's pledge of 30 million euros to support gas purchases and restore heating in the region, which has been without gas since Russia halted supplies on January 1 due to an unpaid debt. Prime Minister Dorin Recean confirmed that the gas would help maintain system pressure and support electricity generation in Transnistria, with specific deliveries scheduled from February 1 to 10. Meanwhile, a Hungarian company, MOL, is looking to sign a contract to supply additional gas, although the Moldovan government is not acting as an intermediary. The situation remains urgent as Transnistria's Kremlin-backed leadership warned of imminent gas shortages, exacerbating the humanitarian crisis.
