China Warns EU Against Confrontation at Strategic Dialogue in Brussels

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi urged the European Union to avoid a confrontational stance and stressed that differences should not derail China-EU relations during the 13th round of China-EU High-Level Strategic Dialogue held in Brussels. Wang emphasized that none of Europe's current challenges originate from China and called for a more objective, pragmatic approach toward China, highlighting the extensive common interests and partnership between the two sides rather than rivalry. He contrasted China’s approach with that of the United States, urging Europe not to view China through a US lens, and portrayed China as a peaceful, cooperative global actor committed to multilateralism and upholding international order. EU High Representative Kaja Kallas expressed concerns about China’s role in European security issues, including alleged assistance to Russia in the Ukraine war, cyber-attacks, and interference in democratic processes, which Wang countered by advocating for mutual respect and dialogue. Both sides underscored the importance of cooperation to address global challenges such as the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and Iranian nuclear issue, with Wang highlighting the 50th anniversary of China-EU diplomatic ties and the shared goal of providing global stability amid rising international uncertainties. The dialogue reiterates China’s intention to present itself as a reliable partner and counterbalance to US policies, while the EU seeks clearer commitments from Beijing on security concerns.
