Ex-Tory MP Craig Williams, 14 Others Charged in Election Betting Scandal

Craig Williams, a former Conservative MP and aide to ex-Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, is among 15 individuals charged with gambling offences linked to insider betting on the timing of the 2024 general election. The Gambling Commission's investigation revealed that Williams placed a bet of £100 on a July election just days before it was officially announced, raising suspicions of using confidential information to gain an unfair advantage. Other notable figures charged include Conservative members Russell George and Nick Mason, as well as Laura Saunders, a former Tory candidate. The commission emphasized its commitment to addressing illegal betting practices under the Gambling Act 2005, which prohibits cheating based on insider knowledge. The scandal has been cited as a significant factor in the Conservative Party's electoral losses during the 2024 elections. The 15 individuals are scheduled to appear in court on June 13.
