Storm Wipha Causes Heavy Rain, Flooding Across Northern Vietnam, Northeast Thailand
Tropical Storm Wipha made landfall along Vietnam's northern coast, bringing destructive winds, heavy rains, and widespread flooding, particularly impacting Thanh Hoa and Ninh Binh provinces with floodwaters reaching up to 80 cm and waves as high as 4–5 meters near Ninh Binh's Ruined Church. The storm has caused significant disruptions including power outages, submerged streets, and damage to coastal infrastructure, while authorities in Hai Phong closed coastal routes and evacuated residents to prevent harm. Although Wipha is weakening and moving inland toward southern China, heavy rainfall and gusty winds continue to affect northern and northeastern Thailand, especially provinces bordering Laos such as Bung Kan and Nakhon Phanom, with warnings of flash floods and rough seas along the Andaman coast and the Gulf of Thailand. Bangkok and surrounding areas are also experiencing thunderstorms and strong winds, with forecasts predicting these conditions to persist through at least July 24. In Vietnam, the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting warns of ongoing risks of flash floods and landslides in Thanh Hoa and Nghe An provinces due to saturated soil and continued heavy rain. Residents in affected areas are urged to stay alert for hazards including tornadoes, lightning, and strong gusts as the storm system moves through the region.
