California Therapists Arrested for Abuse, Assault Claims

Mary McGrew, a 50-year-old speech therapist at Sonora Elementary School, was arrested on charges of misdemeanor child abuse and battery after allegedly assaulting a 7-year-old child with autism during a therapy session. The incident, which took place on January 23, was reported by the child's parents after they noticed changes in their child's behavior. In a separate case, 25-year-old Matthew Martinez, a former behavioral therapist at Foothill Family, was arrested for unlawful sexual acts with a minor. Martinez is believed to have worked at the organization until January 2025 and is currently being held without bail as authorities investigate potential additional victims. Both cases highlight serious allegations of misconduct within therapeutic settings, prompting investigations from local law enforcement and school officials. The Sonora Elementary School District and Foothill Family are cooperating with investigations into the respective incidents.
