Three Illinois Officers Shot Responding Suspicious Person Call, Suspect Custody

Three police officers were shot Saturday night in Fairview Heights, Illinois, near St. Louis, while responding to a call about a suspicious individual prowling near a residence, which turned into a possible domestic situation. During the encounter, the suspect opened fire, injuring three officers: one was shot in the face and required emergency surgery, listed in critical but stable condition; another was shot in the arm, breaking a bone; and the third was hit in the back but protected by a bulletproof vest. Two additional officers sustained injuries during the struggle to arrest the suspect and were treated and released. The suspect was taken into custody, and a firearm was recovered; authorities confirmed there is no active threat to the community.
