OpenAI Launches ChatGPT Atlas Browser on Mac

OpenAI has launched ChatGPT Atlas, a Chromium-based AI browser built around its ChatGPT assistant, available now on macOS with Windows, iOS and Android versions coming soon. Atlas embeds a ChatGPT sidebar and split-screen UI that can summarize pages, edit text inline, and retain optional persistent browser memories with privacy controls; users are by default opted out of having browsing data used to train models and can delete history or disable memories. It includes an Agent Mode (Operator) that can perform multi-step tasks such as trip planning, shopping and booking reservations, but Agent Mode cannot run code, download files, or access other apps, and some advanced agent features are initially limited to paid ChatGPT tiers. The launch gives OpenAI a direct foothold against Google Chrome and other AI browsers, drawing market attention and raising questions about trust, data access, regulatory scrutiny and potential impacts on web traffic.
