Filmmaker Zach Cregger has confirmed that a prequel focusing on the character Aunt Gladys from his 2025 mystery horror hit Weapons is officially in development with Warner Bros. This project was conceived even before the original film's release and aims to explore Aunt Gladys' backstory, which was only hinted at in Weapons, where she was portrayed as a witch responsible for children's disappearances. Cregger revealed that early drafts included different versions of Aunt Gladys, including one significantly less human, and that material about her backstory was originally cut to keep the film concise. While the director's immediate focus is on directing a new Resident Evil film for Sony, he expressed genuine excitement about the prequel's story. The character of Aunt Gladys, played by Amy Madigan, was notably inspired by artist Cindy Sherman and a surreal moment from David Lynch's Twin Peaks, contributing to her unsettling presence. Warner Bros. and New Line Cinema are backing the expansion of the Weapons universe, signaling a franchise in the making.
