Englewood Police Recover Historic Washington Painting

A historic reverse glass painting of George Washington, stolen from an Englewood storage unit in January 2024, has been recovered after more than a year. The painting, part of a limited series created by unnamed Chinese artists in the 1790s, was located thanks to a Crime Stoppers tip that led police to a man who unknowingly acquired it during a stay at a Denver hotel. The hotel clerk reportedly found the painting abandoned in a vacated room and gave it to the man, who hesitated to come forward due to the publicity surrounding the theft. After two weeks of negotiation, the painting was voluntarily surrendered to the police, who found it largely undamaged apart from minor frame damage. The painting is now to be returned to the insurance company. Englewood Police, with assistance from the FBI, are continuing to investigate the original theft.
