George Ridgway, a trained archaeologist, discovered a remarkable hoard of 748 ancient Roman gold and silver coins in a Suffolk field in September 2019, initially inspired by his childhood hero, Indiana Jones. The treasure, dating from as early as 206 BC to 46 AD, was auctioned for £132,865, significantly exceeding its estimated value of £75,000. Ridgway's find included a silver coin issued by Julius Caesar and coins believed to have been buried by a Roman soldier during a fierce local battle in 47 AD. Sixty-three coins were claimed by museums, while the rest were auctioned, with the highest individual coin fetching £7,000. Ridgway expressed his excitement over the discovery and plans to share his windfall with his father. The sale represents one of the largest hoards of Iron Age and Roman coins found in the UK.
