University of Rhode Island Receives Record $65 Million Gift

The University of Rhode Island (URI) has received its largest gift in history, a $65 million donation from the estate of Helen Izzi Schilling, a 1954 alumna, and her husband Francis. This endowment will create the Helen Izzi Schilling ’54 and Francis Schilling Scholars Program, providing up to $20,000 annually for four years to high-achieving undergraduate students in STEM fields, starting in fall 2025. URI President Marc B. Parlange expressed gratitude for the Schillings' contribution, highlighting its potential to transform the lives of many students. The scholarship program is part of URI's ongoing efforts to enhance its financial aid offerings, following a successful fundraising campaign. Approximately 100 students are expected to qualify based on academic performance and community involvement. Helen Schilling's legacy is positioned to support future generations in the STEM disciplines, addressing the national need for more professionals in these areas.
