A tragic shipwreck off the coast of Yemen's Ta'iz governorate resulted in the deaths of 13 individuals and left 14 others missing, as reported by the International Organization for Migration (IOM). The boat, carrying 25 Ethiopian migrants and two Yemeni nationals, sank under unclear circumstances near the Dubab district after departing from Djibouti. Among the deceased are 11 men and two women, while search operations continue for the missing, including the captain and his assistant. This incident underscores the ongoing dangers faced by migrants on this perilous route, which has seen a rise in fatalities and disappearances in recent months. The IOM highlighted that the number of migrants arriving in Yemen has surged, with over 97,200 recorded in 2023 alone. The agency calls for collective efforts to ensure the safety and protection of vulnerable migrants fleeing dire situations in search of better opportunities in the Gulf states.
