Jacobs, AtkinsRéalis JV Support UK National Highways’ Net Zero Emissions Strategy

Jacobs and AtkinsRéalis have been jointly appointed by National Highways to provide environmental and sustainability technical services supporting the UK's goal of achieving net zero carbon emissions by 2050 across England's strategic road network. The three-year contract involves designing lower-carbon roads, developing nature-based solutions, mitigating pollution, optimizing resource and energy use, and integrating roads into their surrounding landscapes. This partnership builds on an eight-year collaboration and includes innovative projects such as the Structures Moonshot and graphene-enhanced asphalt trials, both recognized for advancing sustainable infrastructure. The joint venture emphasizes a collaborative delivery approach, engaging small and medium-sized enterprises and academic partners to foster innovative solutions and improve biodiversity and climate resilience. Both Jacobs and AtkinsRéalis hold PAS 2080:2023 carbon management certification, underscoring their commitment to sustainability in infrastructure. The initiative aims to transform England's highways into a connected, resilient, and environmentally sustainable network while supporting long-term economic growth.
