Search Begins for Missing British Soldier Nairac

The Independent Commission for the Location of Victims' Remains (ICLVR) has commenced a search for the remains of Captain Robert Nairac, a British Army officer abducted and murdered by the IRA in 1977. This search, taking place in the Faughart area of County Louth, follows years of gathering credible information regarding his burial site among the 'Disappeared'—a group of 16 individuals secretly killed and buried during the Troubles. Lead investigator Jon Hill emphasized that the search area is less than one acre of farmland, which is more stable than previous bogland sites. The search will continue until Nairac's remains are either found or deemed impossible to recover, with no set time limit. Nairac, posthumously awarded the George Cross for bravery, was only 29 years old when he was murdered, and his family has been kept informed throughout the process. This marks the first official attempt to locate his remains since he was reported missing nearly five decades ago.
