Netflix Plans T.J. Hooker '80s Police Procedural Movie Reboot
The 1990s sitcom Sabrina the Teenage Witch is experiencing a resurgence on Paramount+, coinciding with the memory of its darker Netflix adaptation, Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, which ran from 2018 to 2020 as a supernatural horror series. Meanwhile, the 2009 sci-fi reboot of V, originally a miniseries about aliens covertly controlling Earth, has surprisingly topped iTunes VOD charts in 2025 despite its divisive reception and cancellation after two seasons. Netflix has secured rights for a reboot of the 1980s police procedural T.J. Hooker, starring William Shatner, but plans to remake it as an action-comedy movie rather than a grimdark series, inspired by the recent success of The Naked Gun franchise reboot. Writers Jarrad Paul and Andy Mogel, along with producers Sophie Cassidy and Matt Crespy, are attached to the T.J. Hooker film project, with development aimed at balancing modern sensibilities with the original’s moral themes. The original T.J. Hooker series followed a veteran sergeant returning to uniform duty to train new recruits and combat crime, and while it lasted five seasons, it remains a cult favorite among fans. This film reboot is part of Netflix’s broader strategy to revive classic IPs, joining other reboots in development such as Land of the Lost and Scooby-Doo.
