JLR Extends Shutdown; Losses Could Reach Billions
Jaguar Land Rover has extended a production shutdown at its UK and global operations until at least October 1 after a cyberattack that began around Aug. 31–Sept. 1 and forced the company to shut internal systems and halt vehicle output at sites including Solihull, Halewood and Wolverhampton. The stoppage has paused roughly 1,000 cars a day at the three British plants, is costing the company tens of millions of pounds daily and could result in losses in the billions, while threatening supplier cashflows and risking bankruptcies across the supply chain. JLR says it is working with cybersecurity specialists, the U.K. National Cyber Security Centre and law enforcement on a phased, cautious restart but has not disclosed whether data were stolen or who is responsible, and full recovery could stretch into November. Government ministers and MPs have engaged with JLR and supply‑chain firms to offer support as unions and smaller suppliers raise alarm over jobs and cashflow. Parent Tata Motors’ shares fell after the announcement, and officials and industry observers are treating the breach alongside a wider wave of sophisticated ransomware attacks that raise national security and economic concerns.
