Taxis Allowed in Belfast Bus Lanes During Christmas

In a bid to alleviate traffic congestion in Belfast city centre during the festive season, Infrastructure Minister John O’Dowd has announced that Class A and C taxis will be permitted to use specific bus lanes starting December 18. This temporary traffic regulation comes as roadworks related to the new Grand Central Station have exacerbated congestion in the area. O'Dowd emphasized his commitment to introducing longer-term measures, including a pilot scheme for taxi access to bus lanes, which will undergo consultation early next year. He urged travelers to plan their journeys accordingly, especially during the busy Christmas period. Sinn Féin MLA Danny Baker praised the decision as a means to support local businesses and maintain the vibrancy of the city centre. The Department for Infrastructure (DFI) will continue to collaborate with stakeholders to address traffic issues effectively.
