NC State forecasts 12-15 named storms for 2025 hurricane season

Researchers at North Carolina State University predict that the 2025 Atlantic hurricane season will see 12 to 15 named storms, which aligns with recent averages. Of these storms, six to eight may develop into hurricanes, with two to three potentially reaching major hurricane status. This forecast is supported by over a century of historical data analyzing hurricane positions and intensity, as well as environmental factors like sea-surface temperatures. Comparatively, Colorado State University has estimated a more active season with 17 named storms, suggesting a growing trend in storm activity. The Atlantic hurricane season runs from June 1 to November 30.
