Woman Charged with Assault on Perak Sultan during National Day

A 41-year-old woman, Nurhaswani Afni Mohamad Zorki, was charged with assault under Section 352 of Malaysia’s Penal Code for attempting to hug Perak's Sultan Nazrin Muizzuddin Shah during the state-level Independence Day celebration in Ipoh. The incident occurred on August 31 in front of the Ipoh Town Hall and was stopped by security personnel. The prosecution revealed that Nurhaswani may be suffering from schizophrenia, and the court ordered a month-long psychiatric observation to determine her fitness to stand trial. She remains in remand until the next hearing scheduled for October 8. If convicted, she faces up to three months in jail, a fine of RM1,000, or both. Authorities noted that Nurhaswani has previous drug-related cases and is under psychiatric supervision.
