Cameron Alvarez, a 34-year-old man from Livonia, pleaded guilty to two counts of first-degree criminal sexual conduct related to a sexual assault that occurred at Western Michigan University in January 2010. The charges were part of a cold-case prosecution initiated by the Kalamazoo County Sexual Assault Kit Initiative (SAKI) after the victim's sexual assault evidence kit was tested in 2016. Alvarez, then a sophomore, assaulted an 18-year-old freshman after she made it clear she did not want to engage in sexual activity, with surveillance footage showing he was in her dorm room for less than 16 minutes. Although the victim initially chose not to pursue charges due to concerns about how she was treated by police, the investigation revealed six other women had reported sexual assault by Alvarez between 2009 and 2014. He is expected to serve 12 to 25 years in prison and will be subject to lifetime electronic monitoring. The case highlights the importance of the SAKI units in addressing cold cases of sexual assault in Michigan.
