Foster + Partners has unveiled a masterplan to reconstruct Antakya, Turkey, following the devastating earthquakes in February 2023, which resulted in the destruction of approximately 80% of the city and over 53,000 casualties. The project is part of a broader initiative by the Türkiye Design Council, supported by the Turkish Ministry of Environment and other local entities, aiming to revitalize the region through sustainable urban development. The masterplan focuses on retaining Antakya's historic character while enhancing accessibility and resilience against future disasters, proposing new green spaces and efficient transportation networks. The collaborative effort involved local and international experts, aiming to set a new standard for post-disaster recovery by prioritizing community needs. Foster + Partners aims to address pre-existing urban challenges, including flood-prone areas and uneven distribution of public spaces, in their reconstruction strategy.
