UK Counterterror Chief Calls for Social Media Ban for Under-16s Amid Violence Concerns
Britain's head of counterterrorism, Matt Jukes, has drawn a stark comparison between the harm caused by social media and the 'cancer' of smoking, advocating for a ban on its use by children under 16. Speaking to The Times Crime and Justice Commission, Jukes emphasized that online radicalization, which surged during the pandemic, has led to increased cases involving young people in counterterrorism efforts. He suggested that the UK should consider implementing restrictions similar to Australia's recent ban on social media for under-16s, stating that this issue warrants serious attention from policymakers. Jukes, along with Home Secretary Yvette Cooper and Shadow Home Secretary Chris Philp, called for stronger regulations on social media companies and highlighted the necessity of revising the Online Safety Act to better protect children. His remarks underline the urgent need for action to address the dangers posed by online content that drives violence and extremism among youth. Jukes cautioned against delaying regulatory measures, as was the case with tobacco, warning that the harmful effects of social media are already impacting communities and young lives today.
