Typhoon in Taiwan

Typhoon Krathon is currently approaching Taiwan, prompting widespread closures of schools, offices, and financial markets for the third consecutive day. With maximum sustained winds of 137 kph (85 mph) and heavy rainfall, the typhoon is expected to make landfall on Taiwan's densely populated west coast, particularly affecting the cities of Kaohsiung and Tainan. Authorities have evacuated thousands from vulnerable areas, and nearly 40,000 troops are on standby for rescue operations. Reports indicate at least two fatalities and over 100 injuries linked to the storm, alongside significant disruptions to transportation, including the grounding of domestic flights. The government has advised residents to stay indoors and avoid coastal areas, recalling the devastation of the 1977 Typhoon Thelma. As Krathon continues to weaken, the risk of mudslides and landslides remains a concern across the island.
