Alexandra Eckersley, the daughter of baseball Hall of Famer Dennis Eckersley, is on trial for allegedly abandoning her newborn son after giving birth in a tent in subfreezing temperatures on Christmas night 2022. Defense attorneys argue that Eckersley, 27, did not know she was pregnant, believed the baby had died, and was suffering from substance use and mental health issues, including bipolar disorder. Prosecutors state the newborn was left alone for over an hour in temperatures as low as 15 degrees Fahrenheit, leading to respiratory distress and hypothermia. During opening statements, it was revealed that Eckersley was bleeding heavily and thought she had miscarried, with her boyfriend claiming the baby had no pulse. Despite claiming the baby was alive initially, she misled police about the child’s location for 73 minutes before officers discovered the infant. Eckersley has pleaded not guilty to multiple charges, including assault and endangering the welfare of a child.
