Ferris Bueller Vest Sells for $279,400 at Sotheby's New York
The iconic sweater vest worn by Matthew Broderick as Ferris Bueller in the 1986 classic "Ferris Bueller's Day Off" sold for $279,400 at Sotheby's New York auction, attracting 11 bids. The vest, instantly recognizable from the famous "Twist and Shout" parade scene, was originally a cardigan bought off the rack at Marshall Field's and modified by costume designer Marilyn Vance, who cut off the sleeves to create the signature look. The sale marked the launch of Sotheby’s newly dedicated Popular Culture department, highlighting a growing market for nostalgic movie memorabilia. Ralph DeLuca, Sotheby’s Vice Chairman of Popular Culture, described the vest as a piece of 1980s Americana that symbolizes youthful rebellion and remains culturally significant across generations. Vance, who also worked on other John Hughes classics like "The Breakfast Club" and "Pretty in Pink," chose the vest to embody Ferris's unique, rebellious spirit. The auction included other memorabilia from the film, such as a baseball ticket and screen-used baseball from the Wrigley Field scene.
