Nio Launches Firefly EV in China Starting at $16,400

Nio has officially launched its third electric vehicle brand, Firefly, introducing a compact hatchback aimed at competing with established models like the BMW Mini and Smart at a starting price of around $16,400 in China. The Firefly hatchback comes in two variants—Freedom and Glow Editions—offering advanced features such as intelligent assisted driving, a 7.1 surround sound system, and a panoramic sunroof. The vehicle supports both DC fast charging and Nio's battery swap technology, with the Battery as a Service (BaaS) program set to become available in August. Firefly boasts practical storage, a premium interior, and a 42.1 kWh LFP battery offering up to 420 km CLTC range, with a design tailored for urban use. Nio has reduced Firefly’s price significantly from its presale level to stay competitive amid shifting EV market dynamics in China. Deliveries begin April 29 in China, with European launches planned, marking a strategic expansion as Nio pursues profitability and global growth.
