US Navy Defeats Houthi Attack in Gulf of Aden

U.S. Navy destroyers USS Stockdale and USS O’Kane successfully repelled an attack from Iran-backed Houthi militants while escorting three U.S.-flagged merchant vessels in the Gulf of Aden on December 9 and 10. The Houthis launched multiple drones and one anti-ship cruise missile, but no injuries or damage occurred to the ships or personnel. This incident marks the second successful defense by the destroyers in just over a week, with a previous engagement occurring from November 30 to December 1. U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) emphasized their commitment to protecting U.S. interests and regional shipping routes against ongoing Houthi threats. The Houthis have vowed to continue their attacks until a cease-fire is achieved in Gaza, indiscriminately targeting vessels without discernible links to Israel. Since November 2023, over 111 incidents involving maritime attacks in the region have been reported, resulting in casualties and sunk vessels.
