Four former employees of a Milwaukee hotel have pleaded not guilty to felony murder charges in the death of D'Vontaye Mitchell, a 43-year-old Black man who died after being pinned to the ground for up to nine minutes during an encounter outside the Hyatt Regency. The defendants, Todd Alan Erickson, Devin W. Johnson-Carson, Brandon LaDaniel Turner, and Herbert T. Williamson, were charged on August 6 after a medical examiner ruled Mitchell's death a homicide due to restraint asphyxia compounded by drug effects. The incident has drawn attention to the ongoing scrutiny of the use of force, particularly against people of color, amid national protests following the murder of George Floyd. Bail for Erickson and Turner was recently reduced despite objections from Mitchell's family, who have criticized the 37-day delay before charges were filed. The family asserts Mitchell was in a mental health crisis at the time, and they contend that legal action was necessary to prompt the charges. If convicted, the men could face up to 15 years and nine months in prison.
